My name is Karl Hopwood. I'm based in the UK and work for the Insafe team here at EUN as an in house esafety consultant. I worked in primary education for 14 years and was headteacher of 2 primary schools in the UK where I was involved in a number of etwinning projects. Since 2008 I have worked as an esafety consultant with a range of organisations including CEOP, BECTA, Childnet International, the European Commission and of course Insafe.
I still work with children and young people regularly in order to make them more aware of online safety issues, particularly relating to their online reputation.
I am looking forward to working with you all. Please do get in touch if you have any questions or would like any further information or support about the course.

Responsible use of the internet
Welcome to this learning lab which will be looking at responsible use of the internet and how to encourage children, young people, parents and teachers to recognise how they should behave when they are online.
The objectives for this course are as follows, but we hope you will use the communication channels available to get as much information as you can so that you can address online safety issues back in your own classroom:
• To improve understanding of how children and young people are using technology and to particularly focus on some of the areas where they find it challenging to make the right choices
• To provide tips and tools for teachers to promote more responsible use of the internet among their pupils
• To provide some solutions, resources and classroom activities
There will be a number of tasks to complete during the course including opportunities to share your thoughts, ideas and opinions. The whole topic of esafety is constantly evolving and expanding and it is impossible to focus on all of the possible issues in such a short course. I hope that the course will prove useful - I am sure you are aware that there are a wide range of resources available for teaching online safety and media literacy - hopefully the links will take you to some of these, but if you would like further information about anything more specific then please just let me know - if you post your questions on the forum someone will be able to help.
Online technology has opened remarkable new opportunities to children and young people for commuicating, socializing and learning. Insafe's aim is not only to promote these advantages but also to raise awareness of possible pitfalls and to assist young people in developing effective strategies to deal with them. The network implements innovative actions and campaigns to achieve its goals, catering also to the needs of parents, teachers, youth group leaders, librarians and other educators, all important allies in spreading the awareness message. Through sharing of experience and exchange of good practice between national memebers across Europe and beyond, Insafe offers and wealth of resources and information through its central portal at www.saferinternet.org, and national language portals in all 30 countries of the network. To find out more about the Safer Internet Centre in your country please go tohttp://www.saferinternet.org/web/guest/centre-european-map
We have a wide range of resources available in both English and national languages - please visit the Insafe website

Tasks:
1. Please look at the powerpoint presentation - this is designed to provide some food for thought around responsible use of the internet - for children and young people and adults. There are notes under each slide too which are designed to explain some of the content and provoke some discussion. Internet safety education has to be about empowering and educating rather than blocking and preventing. Internet safety is also a "whole school" issue and all staff need to have at least some awareness of the issues and how to address and deal with them. Hopefully the powerpoint presentation will provide a stimulus for discussing some of these issues with pupils and staff. The powerpoint is available from the additional resources page too if you would like a hard copy. Please share any of your thoughts or comments.
2. There is a link to a video in the presentation - the video is called the promise and can be viewed from this page.
3. Please vote using the poll to tell us what your greatest concern is for pupils in your school with regards to online safety. Is it that they will be cyberbullied, are you concerned about their privacy or do you worry that they could be contacted by a predator - choose the most appropriate answer and cast your vote.
4. Carry out the same vote in class with your pupils if you are able to. Do they have any fears or concerns about their online activities - what worries them? Please use the forum to let us know what they think.

Generally that social networks play an important
role in people's lives, it is indisputable. I think, despite the fact that

still true, but if their profiles are entered, because they know that the
